  • Mid-Atlantic Venture Association today named the 40 early and expansion stage technology companies that have been competitively selected to present at Capital Connection ’10, May 19-20 at the Hilton Hotel, Baltimore, MD.

    “With the assistance of nearly thirty seasoned investors and advisors, we are pleased to have made the difficult selection process this year to put forward 40 companies from such a varied, promising pool of company applicants,” said Tom Grossi, New Enterprise Associates, one of four selection committee co-chairs. “Having expanded our application process for early and expansion companies to a broader geographical footprint, innovative companies from our core mid-Atlantic region and beyond will now take advantage of Capital Connection’s nationally recognized platform and the resources that the conference and this market provide.” Other selection co-chairs are Steve Fredrick, Grotech Ventures; Tom Roberts, Harbert Venture Partners; and Sever Totia, Edison Venture Fund.

  • When someone walks in to The Coffee Groundz in Houston and demands a free coffee because they are "mayor," general manager J.R. Cohen asks to see the person's cell phone. If that makes any sense to you, you're probably familiar with the urban social media phenomenon foursquare.com.

    Foursquare is best described as a mashup of Facebook, Twitter and real-life meet-ups. Users can "check in" from their locations and also see where other Foursquare contacts are lurking. The person who checks in the most from a particular spot is named "mayor" of that spot. "We have people challenging each other all the time to be mayor of Coffee Groundz," Cohen says. "We've definitely seen an increase in business, and offering something free to the mayor has become a great game."
