  • In early fall 2008, the partners at Grotech Ventures in Vienna were sitting around a conference table watching news of the Lehman Brothers collapse on television.
    "I said, 'There are only two ways we can respond to this: Wait for things to unfold and wait to react to things as they unfold, or we can assume this is the beginning of something really bad,' " said Frank Adams, the venture capital firm's founder.
    Faced with that fork in the road at a critical economic moment, Adams and his partners opted for the latter perspective — which meant making a series of difficult decisions.
